Yes it’s the weekend again! Got a boatload of new arrivals for you guys, and some excellent warehouse finds too. And of couse, as always, more $5 and under items. You kiddies really loved the fliers and photos from the bomp files that I listed last week, so I found some more for you. It makes me happy to think they will be seen and enjoyed by fans instead of gathering dust here, so i’ll try to keep em coming! This week I found some Stiv Bators photos and a nice DMZ flier.

Be sure to get the new Jack Lee release if you havent already, it’s a killer! And the reviews continue to roll in for Datura4, like the one below from maximum volume:

“In the summer of last year, some Mp3s arrived at MV Towers from the Alive Naturalsound stable. Like when you were a kid you always knew that the red and white Atlantic spine was the mark of a great record, then reviewing as we do now, you always think “oh this might be cool” when it comes from certain labels.

This was from a band called Datura4, who had emerged from Aussie pop heroes DM3 and featured members of You Am I (a band who we’d loved back at the turn of the century) Datura4 dealt in classic rock and the album was a triumph. MV waxed lyrical on the subject and as well as calling “Demon Blues” amongst other things “spectacular”, we said it was “kind of a cross between chilled out Psych rock, blues and fuzzy 1960s garage rock n roll.

Now, perhaps in the spirit of those classic rock forefathers, just over 12 months later comes “Hairy Mountain” and, it too is a triumph.”

HOT KNIVES - ST SPANISH IMPORT -Label:GOT KINDA LOST Named after the song by ex-Big Star founder member Chris Bell is the newest reissue imprint by the Guerssen Label Group (of Spain). Curated by Jeremy Cargill (Assistant Editor for Ugly Things Magazine), the label s focus is archival and reissue work specializing in the realms of proto-punk, 70s pop/power pop, glam, psych, privately-pressed hard rock, and out of time treasures.
Hot Knives were a late period folk-rock / power pop combo from the latter 70s San Francisco and held two ex-Flamin Groovies members in their ranks (guitaristTim Lynch, and drummer Danny Mihm). Led by the hair-rising boy-girl sound from the Houpt siblings (Michael and Debra), and bolstered by the ringing, jangly guitars of Lynch/Houpt, and driving rhythm section of Mihm and bassist Ed Wilson, sparks flew when they united as a whole. This set collects the tracks from their late 70s singles, and a further batch of dynamite tracks pressed into wax (seeing vinyl release for the first time).As music journalist Jud Cost (Sundazed Music / Magnet Magazine) says in the extensive liner notes, Hot Knives were a little too late for the '60s hippie trip and a little too hippie for the crash'n'burn punk rock brushfire of the mid-'70s, but their consistent songwriting and way with a hook should appeal to all with a pop heart beating in their chest, fans of 60s SF sounds, and folk-rock. OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY- DIGITAL AGE (psych garage pop)-Label:BURGER Garage rock and psychedelic pop became fashionable again during the four years between Seemingly Solid Reality and The Digital Age, so Outrageous Cherry's return is nothing if not well-timed. Of course, Matthew Smith and company are lifers -- this album arrives 20 years after Outrageous Cherry -- so the fact that The Digital Age was released by Burger Records is more of a reflection on the band's impact on that scene than an attempt to be hip. Either way, Burger is a perfect home for them, and especially for their distinctly (and somewhat perversely) lo-fi approach this time around. Outrageous Cherry come wrapped in more fuzz and echo than they have in years, serving up all their different flavors of garage-pop and nodding to the Troggs, the Velvet Underground, and the Stooges along the way. STOOGES - ST 180 GRAM - Label:SUNDAZED While the Stooges had a few obvious points of influence -- the swagger of the early Rolling Stones, the horny pound of the Troggs, the fuzztone sneer of a thousand teenage garage bands, and the Velvet Underground's experimental eagerness to leap into the void -- they didn't really sound like anyone else around when their first album hit the streets in 1969. It's hard to say if Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, Dave Alexander, and the man then known as Iggy Stooge were capable of making anything more sophisticated than this, but if they were, they weren't letting on, and the best moments of this record document the blithering inarticulate fury of the post-adolescent id. Ron Asheton's guitar runs (fortified with bracing use of fuzztone and wah-wah) are so brutal and concise they achieve a naïve genius, while Scott Asheton's proto-Bo Diddley drums and Dave Alexander's solid bass stomp these tunes into submission with a force that inspires awe. And Iggy's vividly blank vocals fill the "so what?" shrug of a thousand teenagers with a wealth of palpable arrogance and wondrous confusion. One of the problems with being a trailblazing pioneer is making yourself understood to others, and while John Cale seemed sympathetic to what the band was doing, he didn't appear to quite get it, and as a result he made a physically powerful band sound a bit sluggish on tape. But "1969," "I Wanna Be Your Dog," "Real Cool Time," "No Fun," and other classic rippers are on board, and one listen reveals why they became clarion calls in the punk rock revolution.
