CLIFF ROMAN IN THE HOUSE

The Weirdos were in many ways the greatest of L.A.'s punk bands. In early 1977 their mighty sound and singular style were the big-bang igniting the L.A. punk rock scene, as they proclaimed "we're not punks, we're weirdos from Hollyweird!". This wasn't just goofy sloganeering, this was a stance intended to distinguish them from the burgeoning punk rock scenes in New York and London. The Weirdos were not only bringing a new sound and writing teen punks anthems, they were also responsible for their graphics (posters, covers, flyers) and designed their own clothes! Their 1977 Bomp single "Destroy All Music" was a nihilistic anthem, and is now regarded as a classic, and by the time they made their mini-LP two years later they had turned into a powerful, polished band, without losing any of their outrageous attitude. "Destroy All Music - 30th Anniversary Edition " compiles the now classic 1977 EP Bomp and the 1979 "Who, What, When, Where, Why?" mini-LP in its entirety and includes previously unreleased early demos.

GRAVEDIGGER V - All Black & Hairy (60 PEBBLES style Classic cave garage) BLUE Label:VOXX 1984 RECORDING. ORIGINAL RAINBO PRESSING. The one proper album the band released in its lifetime, All Black and Hairy is both perfectly named and perfectly performed -- if it's nothing but a re - All Black & Hairy LTD ED of 150 CLEAR BLUE VINYL! (60 style Classic cave garage ) -vivalist approach at heart, it's such a damn entertaining one that there's no cause for complaint. With its title track taken from the appropriately goonball back catalog of Screamin' Lord Sutch and its general snot-mouthed attitude from every last Nuggets and Pebbles selection ever, about the only thing missing are the lava lamps and garage stink. Saying the band uses the right combination of fuzztone guitars and echo and heavy frug rhythms is a bit like saying the sky is blue -- it's just one of those things to be expected -- but the sheer energy and abandon present keep everything from simply retracing the past to no point. Leighton's credit is for "lead screaming," and that about sums it up -- he's not so much singing as pulling off the ultimate teen-wannabe-Mick Jagger performance, only even more aggressively snotty. Ted Friedman's lead guitar solos with the right rave-up spirit and John Hanrattie keeps the core melodies going, while the Tom Ward/David Anderson rhythm section aims to get rears shaking instead of sitting. The album is half split between inspired originals (check out the concluding "Stoneage Stomp") and actual songs from the time, the latter resulting in fun versions of tracks like the Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" and Larry & the Bluenotes' "Night of the Phantom." About the only thing missing is the original studio recording of the band's best number, "It's Spooky," but anyone wanting a quick blast of '60s punk thrills filtered through later years could do much worse than to dig this one up. LP $20 SKU:16261

JOHN THE CONQUEROR - ST (60s style raw rock and roll! )Label:ALIVE John The Conqueror’s self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles (old and new) mined from both the North and the South. Cousins Pierre Moore (vocals & guitar) and Michael Gardner (drums) are natives of Jackson, MS, while bassist Ryan Lynn hails from Philly – where the trio now call home. Together they mix a bedrock of raw deep blues with funk, soul, punk and scuzzed-up rock-n-roll into one helluva potent musical Molotov cocktail. Moore and Gardner have been playing together in bands since their college days in Oxford, MS, and Moore learned to play guitar in his early teens from a homeless man who slept in the back room of an auto repair shop.

"The trio from Mississippi, now based in Philly, have the smoothness of classic 50’s soul mixed with a southern twang." – Knuckle Rumbler

"It’s all smokestacks, greasy ball bearings, mudslides, and corn liquor swilled from mason jars; raggedly scorching guitar riffs, a thunderous rhythm section, and howled vocals. ‘Say What You Want’ rockets me off my rear every time." – Brian Greene / Happening Magazine

"Leader Pierre Moore has a matter-of-fact singing voice, tasteful six-string skills and a tuneful writing style that balances licks and melody and avoids classic rock overload." – Michael Toland / The Big Takeover.

"They will bring you from the church to the juke joint in four quick minutes." – Mad Chicago

"John The Conqueror's new LP is downright street smart funky." – Jeffrey Morgan's Media Blackout.

"Pierre Moore is a charismatic frontman, strutting the stage, ripping away at guitar licks and belting out dynamic vocals. Joining Moore are his cousin Michael Gardner, a force of nature on drums, and local guy Ryan Lynn, who brings a rumbling low end to the mix." – The Key WXPN CD $10 SKU:14629

LONESOME SHACK - More Primitive ST (EArly Black Keys style) Black vinyl! - Label:ALIVE
“More Primitive” finds Seattle’s Lonesome Shack exploring the depths of boogie and country blues. The trio’s sound is raw and immediate with finger-picked guitar lines, soulful crooning and big danceable grooves. Ben Todd’s introspective lyrics take the American blues tradition to a new level, examining personal history, loss of friends, and a burning desire to get to the primitive core of life.

The band began in New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness where Ben Todd hunkered down in the shack he built and studied the music of the American folk and blues lineage. In 2008 Todd joined up with drummer Kristian Garrard in Seattle, and in 2011 bassist Luke Bergman became the third member.

Lonesome Shack was signed to Alive thanks to Van Campbell of the Black Diamond Heavies who brought them to our attention.

NERVEBREAKERS - We Want Everything ( 70s Texas punk) - Label:GET HIP Hailing from Dallas, the Nervebreakers first got together in 1973, but didn’t take off until the mid-’70s punk movement started to affect most larger urban areas of the US. NURT - COMPLETE RADIO SESSIONS 1972/1974 (first Polish heavy rock band )Label:KAMELEON urt was a band from Poland playing some sort of jazzy prog, though very eclectic in the sense that they seemed to pla whatever came to them. That can be a good thing but could also spell confusion and bewilderment. But! I do feel that they get away with it.

The sound on this album is very raw and though recorded in the studio for radio airplay I get the feeling that this is the way they sounded live and that makes me very interested indeed. The music is very bluesy and quite typical, to some extent, of the early progressive scene that came out of jazz, rock and blues. You won't find many classical ingredients, rather a stripped down and dirty progressive rock, bordering on hardrock.

The two opening tracks are great stuff, especially the second. It's heavy and raw bluesy, progressive rock. The fourth track, Syn strachu, reminds med of Deep Purple bar the organ but holds a surprising trumpet solo, performed in a sort of primitive Miles Davis fashion. Interesting track, which leaves the Purple territory and heads into some sort of ballad and back to the jazzy menace of Davis vs. Purple. Morze ognia is more hardrock, Holograficzne Widmo is progressive and Gato is simply raucious but great.

It is an interesting piece of history, this compilation. It showcases the diversity of Eastern bloc progressive. I like it because of the rawness but also the vision of music as something more than genres and cohesiveness. Interesting but not for everyone. I would rate it three stars but some of the music is worth more. Still, I wo uld never part from it. It attracts me in a primitive, earthy way. CD $14 SKU:19156

PETERS, DUANE AND THE HUNNS- - Tickets to Heaven AUTOGRAPHED BY DUANE PETERS! --Label:DISASTER Records Second album by the OC punk rock outfit. Features their classic song 'Love And Hate'. Great Duane Peters skate rock'n'roll. "The mighty, outspoken, tattooed one is back with a vengeance in all of his disheveled, snaggle-toothed glory! PLIMSOULS- Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal (80s POWERPOP!!)Label:ALIVE Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal" showcases the PLIMSOULS at the height of their power, tearing the roof off and on the verge of starting a riot on L.A.'s old Sunset Strip. Recorded at the Whisky A Go Go on October 31, 1981, this previously unreleased 18 song live album includes many of The Plimsouls' classics as well as plenty of surprises. It has been stunningly remastered, features previously unpublished and gorgeous photos by renowned photographer Bob Matheu, and also includes three pummelling tracks with special guests The Fleshtones (CD only).
The first vinyl pressing of the record includes a poster and is limited to 1,000 copies. Considering that all of The Plimsouls official studio releases are currently out of print, this explosive live document of the band igniting The Whisky nearly three decades ago stands as not only a highly anticipated release from the band, but also as a testament to the power of pure, unadulterated rock & roll.
Formed in 1978 by Peter Case (vocals, guitar) following his departure from The Nerves and The Breakaways, with Louie Ramirez (drums), Dave Pahoa (bass) and Eddie Muñoz (guitar), The Plimsouls effectively blended roots, British Invasion and garage rock into one unique soul-punk, garage-pop combo. "They boasted a soulful front man and gifted songwriter in Peter Case; a brittle, unconventional lead guitarist in Eddie Muñoz; and a gutsy, power-packed rhythm section in bassist Dave Pahoa and drummer Lou Ramirez. The ‘Souls didn’t just replicate the cliches of power pop, as so many others did – they, and especially Case, were intent on putting their own imprint on the rock and R&B styles they derived their sound from. Their keen originality and their ‘let’s-rock’ attitude removed them from the run of the mill. Despite the misguided notions of observers intent upon categorization, The Plimsouls were always their own men." — Chris Morris CD $10 SKU:11185

It is complete with liner notes and unpublished photos. Towards the end of their time with Creation, they made their most fully realized album yet, "#' (untitled second). This is the first time this great psychedelic album is being released in the US, and it comes with 3 bonus tracks. "The songs are built on acoustic guitars, then the tricked-out electric guitars are laid on top and garnished with bongos, organs, pianos, and all sorts of classic instruments. Stephen Lawrie's vocals are restrained and semi-emotional and female backing vocals add a touch of sweetness that might otherwise be missing from the record, as the overall atmosphere is very moody and introspective." - AMG LP $25 SKU:11494

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $10 SKU:19205

WILSON, CHRIS, and the SNEETCHES- ST Flamin Groovies related power pop ) - Label:MARILYN Wilson, who was the George Harrison to Cyril Jordan's Lennon/McCartney during the Groovies' most British Invasion-inspired phase, is completely in charge here; along with three spirited live renditions of Flamin Groovies classics, "Between the Lines," "I'll Cry Alone," and, interestingly, "Slow Death" (which was written and recorded by the Roy Loney incarnation of the band before Wilson even joined), the album includes full-band remakes of songs that had appeared on Wilson's 1991 acoustic solo album Random Centuries, including an appealing, Byrds-like rendition of the winsome "If Wishes Were Horses." In true Groovies tradition, a faithful cover of a '60s classic, "Goin' Back" (a Gerry Goffin and Carole King gem that the Byrds themselves, among others, had recorded) rounds out the selection. Wilson is in fine voice, and the Sneetches, as always, sound great, but the arrangements tend to wander a bit too much; although the album is a '60s-vintage hair, over 30 minutes long, only seven songs fill that space, with only two under the all-important four-minute mark.
