CHARLATANS (USA) -LIVE AT THE STRAIGHT THEATRE 1967-Label:1960s Rolling Stone magazine described their music as as "a jaunty, ragtime rhythm that was of a piece with their style. Their repertoire remained essentially folk material - blues, ballads, good time jug band tunes plus a few original numbers and the odd Rolling Stones tune." HORDE - Press Button Firmly (mid sixties rare garage)w 4 bonus tracks -Label:BREAK-A-WAY Rarest 60s garage album by North Carolina students from early 1967. Painstakingly remastered at KSL. Undoubtedly the most exciting mid sixties garage album to be recently discovered in the genre, is that by The Horde from North Carolina. The existence of this self produced album came to collectors ears and eyes only about a year ago. It was recorded more or less accidently in early 1967, released in a micro quantity of only 25 copies and among the local US garage albums of the decade it is one of the few eclectic examples with all the ingredients that makes it outstanding compared with the usual prep-school albums of the time. It contains a blend of exciting originals and well chosen, inspired covers, played in a raw, crude and frantic style. If ever it were true that the over-used assertion that a band's cover versions measured up to the originals, then it is true of The Horde. Why? These five 19-20 year old students from all over the United States did not only blaze a trail for 60s rock in then conservative North Carolina, they also had a general attitude that finds its origins in the young peoples mindset of the mid-sixties that put them outside of the local mainstream and gained them a sort of regional underground popularity. CD has 4 bonus tracks. CD $14 SKU:15346

LOS SONODORES- La Vida (dreamy 1972 psych)-Label:Discos Mariposa First reissue of this dreamy psychedelic rarity from 1972, beloved of many crate-digging dj’s; it’s said to have been made by Spanish and Chilean musicians in the USA; don't know about that, but it was issued in the USA on Caytronics, and has been much sought after since then (see the "Collector's Dreams" books); there are some great beat ballads, as well as nicely trippy melodic psychedelic dreamscapes on what corresponds more or less to side two of the original LP; the instrumentation includes some nice light guitar, which flits in and out and over the tracks in a way that's unusual, ringing out over the organ that’s there at the bottom of the sound spectrum; there's some nice drumming on the record: not exactly funky, but with a nice little kick that really keeps things interesting! a band that were rightly named "the Dreamers" CD $10 SKU:19016

MOOON-SafariDutch 70s style psych pop, acid-folk)Label:BICKERTON Blending psychedelic pop, acid-folk and bits of progressive rock, here's a wonderful, dreamlike album by the Dutch band Mooon. CD $15 SKU:21801

ON AND ONS -Welcome Aboard(Aussie garage rock/powerpoppers)Label:CITADEL Welcome Aboard', the second album by these Australian garage rock/powerpoppers, is produced by band members Glenn and Clyde and mixed once again by Dennis Wilson of early '70s Australian band Khavas Jute. The album features 13 songs that follow and expand upon the guitar-driven sound of the previous disc with vocal harmonies abounding. The band is aided and abetted by a number of guests including Richard Lane (ex-Stems) on organ, and Murray Cook (ex-The Wiggles) on Fender 12 string. CD $16 SKU:21885

VISITORS (AUSTRALIA)-ST (Radio Birdman style Aussie rock and roll)-Label:CITADEL The Visitors were part of a unique time and place in Sydney rock and roll, the likes of which no-one will see again. Venues were opening to what would become a flood of raw and energetic music. After splitting up in England, Radio Birdman's surviving members individually drifted back to Sydney in mid to late 1978. Hundreds of punk and loud high energy rock bands had appeared on the scene, easily going through doors that had been kicked open two years earlier. Many were copies of the style-obsessed English punk scene. Others slavishly copied their (often narrow) perception of what they thought Birdman had been. Some would say that the DIY ethos, not artistic genre, was the Radio's most lasting legacy. Most missed the point. Radio Birdman was a much more musical entity than the razor blade vanguard of punk. The band's demise - and posthumous growth of its legend - left a vacuum in Sydney that demanded to be filled. In a sense, the Visitors did just that. Thanks to this re-issue, the Visitors live on in the recorded sense. A band, or some manifestation of it, may one day play again. It's not been ruled out. Mark sisto (lead vocal and former Radio Birdman Minister of Defence), for one, is moved by the level of interest the band still prompts. "It surprises me and it's touching that there's been as much positive feedback from it as it has gotten older. Why? Perhaps it's because people were so young then, I suppose. Perhaps for many that it was a significant first for them - like your early teenage love that you don't forget? Aw shucks. And also, we were good." CD $14 SKU:21670

BUZZSAW JOINT -CUTS 5 & 6 (wild n' weird sounds from all the globe)-Label:STAG-O-LEE (GERMANY) Buzzsaw Joint was born of a club offering Londoners the chance to revel in the sounds of good ol' trashy rock n' roll in all its vintage vinyl forms. Get your ears around the wild n' weird sounds of the extraordinary and inimitable Buzzsaw Joint! Cut 4 has been compiled by the Juke Joint crew, an international trio of music fanatics. The release on Vip Vop Recs spawned many imitators such as 'Wavy Gravy', '4 Hairy Policemen' et al and paved the way for the equally legendary 'Purple Knif Show'. What few folk knew was that 'Forbidden City Dogfood' was actually less than half of the compilation made by Lux Interior. Now, for the very first time, the entire recording is available, weighing in at well over an hour of crazy, whacky sounds from the Maestro of Mad himself. DOWN IN THE VALLEY- Vol 4 -A heavy dose of Garage Rock & Psych-Funk tracksLabel:PERFECT TOY A heavy dose of Garage Rock & Psych-Funk tracks. The Perfect Toy label continues its righteous quest to unearth the finest rare sounds from way out with Volumes 3 and 4 of its Down In The Valley series and in doing so delivers what is most certainly “A heavy dose of garage rock & psych-funk.” Vol. 3 opens with a characteristically inspiring cut - Sand's cover of Down By The River - one of the best (and certainly one of the most obscure) versions of the Neil Young classic. This is followed by two fine examples of garage rock with a funky twist - Pegasus' Honeysuckle Willow Pride and Enalpria's Sliding, in the slipstream of which follows Heart and Soul's raw psych cut Afterthought. Also featured on this volume are two tributes to Jimi Hendrix that the big man himself would be proud to hear - The Fabulous Troubadores' version of Hey Joe (here literally entitled Tribute To Jimi Hendrix) as well as a psych-soul cover of Stone Free by the The Good Earth. Side B kicks off with Lifeless, the farewell 45 from La Crosse, Wisconsin outfit Today's Tomorrow and also includes two cuts occupying the nexus of garage and psych-funk from Milk & Cookies and Sound Inc., along with the Del Counts's fierce organ-led funk instrumental Who Cares and a very special contribution from GIN whose Louisville Luck is one of two previously unreleased tracks.
Deepest respect goes out once again to crate-digging supremo, Chan The Man, the curator of these two brand-new volumes in the Down In The Valley series. His ambition to search for the impossible and get his hands on private pressings that no one except the freakiest vinyl nerds knew existed has set the path to the release of these two discs. APRYL FOOL-ST (1968 Japanese psych)-Label:SURVIVAL RESEARcH Survival Research present a reissue of Apryl Fool's self-titled album, originally released in 1969. The story of Japanese psychedelic band Apryl Fool and their eponymous debut album is simply extraordinary. It was the vehicle by which bassist Haroumi Hosono first came to prominence, years before he became known as the "Godfather of Japanese electronica" as the founding member and leader of Yellow Magic Orchestra, though this musical titan had work released prior to the group's 1968 founding, such as the song "The Sea Of Summer Day", recorded with Yuko Okuyama and released by King Records the year before. Drummer Takashi "Rei" Matsumoto was a Beatles maniac that had covered songs in his earlier group, Burns, while pioneering prog-rock keyboardist Hiroyoshi Yanagida and guitarists Chu Kosaka and Eiji Kikuchi had all been part of a group called The Floral, formed in 1967 through the Japanese wing of the official fan club of The Monkees (whom they supported during a Japanese tour enacted in October 1968). In September 1969, Apryl Fool played behind musical theater group, Tokyo Kid Brothers, the recording issued in minute quantity as the Love & Banana EP, issued on Columbia Japan's Musicolor subsidiary; Apryl Fool's own LP, also issued on Musicolor that year, had extended spacey psychedelic freak jams in the form of "Tanger" and "Pledging My Time", marathon blues-rock tracks such as "April Blues" and "Honky Tonk Jam", with the employed English-sounding, fairly credible though, parts of the epic opus "The Last Mother Land", featuring Japanese lyrics. Of course, the day that the LP was actually released is reportedly the day that Apryl Fool announced their termination, giving this scarce release another level of legend for connoisseurs. SILVER THUNDERS-ME GRITAN MELENUDO (1968 Spanish garage)Label:MUNSTER The Silver Thunders was one of the best bands to emerge from Bogota's lively beat and garage-rock scene during the second half of the '60s. Whereas their colleagues Los Speakers, The Flippers, Los Beatniks, Los Ampex and Los Streaks managed to release plenty of records (most of which became international collectors' items), The Silver Thunders cut just one LP that never saw the light of day. Until now that is! Dating back to 1968, 'Me Gritan Melenudo' contains a raw and wild mixture of Mersey beat, garage rock and surf influences. The tracklist includes originals as well as cool cover versions of songs known from The Beatles, The Monkees, The Troggs, Lovin' Spoonful, Miriam Makeba and The Ventures. The LP comes with liner notes, rare pix AND a bunch of bonus tracks, including recordings from 1970, at which time the band was known as Los Yoguis! LP $25 SKU:21834

SPARKLES -THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS Texas 60s garage (+7"/CD)-Label:JUKEBOX MUSIC FACTORY The Sparkles were associated with the garage-band and psychedelic rock scene of 1960s Texas, as epitomized by their classic underground hit 'No Friend Of Mine'. The line-up changed few times before 1962, and Stanley Smith finally recruit Harold "Lucky" Floyd (drums and vocals), Donnie Roberts (guitar) and Bobby Smith (bass). Their first recording was the single 'U.T.' under the small label Caron. This third incarnation proved a great hit among the clubs of West Texas, notably the Music Box and The Village Swinger. Indeed, in 2000, local legend Joe Ely described them as the "city's best rock'n'roll band" in the history of the Lubbock music scene published by Texas Monthly. Interestingly, The Sparkles boasted a pair of drummers, with one, the flamboyant Harold Floyd, also lending his voice to their performances. 1966 would constitute a turning point for The Sparkles. Larry Parks -drummer for Roy Orbison, turned producer in Nashville, Tennessee- invited them to sign with Hickory Records, the historic music label founded by Roy Acuff and Fred Rose in 1954. The band came up with 'The Hip', which proved an immediate hit in Austin and extremely popular within the fraternity scene at the University of Texas. On a roll, The Sparkles then recorded 'Something You Said' followed by 'Jack And The Beanstalk'. In 1967, The Sparkles, already a decade old, recorded their chef-d'oeuvre 'No Friend Of Mine', with Nunn's raging guitar riffs and Floyd's remarkably tense vocals. This fiery tour de force would be consecrated by its inclusion on the first CD set of the legendary compilation 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968'. Following their final single, 'Hipsville 29 B.C.', for Hickory Records, The Sparkles once again entered rocky waters, with Nunn and Holt finally deciding to throw in the towel in 1968. Floyd, Smith and Marriot immediately set sail for California, along the way renaming their group The Pearly Gate. This brief interlude would include a handful of appearances on the ABC sitcom 'Judd, For The Defense'. Legend has it, they were also scheduled to perform before Bobby Kennedy the evening of his tragic assassination on June 5th 1968... Returning to Texas, Floyd, Smith and Marriot resurrected The Sparkles, bringing into the fold Steve Weisberg, future guitarist for John Denver. But Floyd's departure in 1975 for California to join Red Wilder Blue spelled the end of this group's 15-year musical odyssey, a tumultuous journey typical of such modest rock'n'roll heroes posthumously crowned by multiple thematic compilations. However, the one you're now holding constitutes the very first anthology dedicated to these incredible Texans LP $28 SKU:21875

YESTERDAY'S CHILDREN-ST (This 1969 underground classic)Label:AKARMA Repress. This 1969 underground classic LP from Connecticut-based band Yesterday's Children is real lost gem. This was the only album they ever made, but oh what a stunning success it was musically, even though it wasn't recognized on a national level. Reggie Wright played a significant role as the lead guitar player. His strengths were more than obvious in each song as he tore his way through each number relentlessly without clutter. The group was led by brothers Denis Croce (guitar) and Richard Croce (vocals). The rhythm section of Chuck Maher (bass) and Ralph Muscatelli (drums) were stand up from start to finish, providing the pumping and thumping force that drove their musical machine. Side one is very good and side two is nothing less than remarkable. The four songs presented are solid and unfailing, featuring the powerful fat chords of Wright. The rest of the band easily falls into line with such resourceful leadership to complete the overall effects of each and every track. Notable as well is the colourful and detailed cover art. This is a fine album that flirts with progressive hard rock continually. LP $29 SKU:21884
